West Virginia Facts

West Virginia is the 41st largest state in the United States and the 35th to be admitted to the Union. West Virginia was admitted to the Union on June 20th, 1863. West Virginia is situated in the Appalachia region of the United States of America. West Virginia broke away from Virginia during the American Civil War and was admitted to the Union as a separate state.

West Virginia is bordered by Pennsylvania to the north, Ohio to the north and west, Kentucky to the west, Maryland to the north and east, and by Virginia to the east and south. The Ohio and Potomac rivers form parts of the boundaries.

West Virginia's nickname is the Mountain State.
