Tennessee Facts
Tennessee is the 36th largest state in the United States and the 16th to be admitted to the Union. Tennessee was admitted to the Union on June 1st, 1796. Tennessee is situated in the Southern United States.
Tennessee lies adjacent to eight other states: Kentucky and Virginia to the north, North Carolina to the east, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi on the south and Arkansas and Missouri on the Mississippi River to the west. Tennessee ties Missouri as the states bordering the most other states. The state is trisected by the Tennessee River.
Tennessee 's nickname is the Volunteer State.
