South Dakota is the 17th largest state in the United States and the 40th to be admitted to the Union. South Dakota was admitted to the Union on November 2nd, 1889. South Dakota is situated in the Midwestern region of the United States of America. South Dakota is named after the Lakota and Dakota (Sioux) American Indian tribes.
South Dakota is disected by the Missouri River. South Dakota is bordered to the north by North Dakota to the south by Nebraska, to the east by Iowa and Minnesota, and to the west by Wyoming and Montana. It is one of the six states of the Frontier Strip.
South Dakota 's nickname is the Mount Rushmore State.
