Rhode Island is the smallest state in the United States and the 13th to be admitted to the Union. Rhode Island was admitted to the Union on May 29th, 1790. Rhode Island is situated in the New England region of the United States of America.
Rhode Island was one of the first of the thirteen original American colonies to declare independence from British rule. Most of Rhode Island actually lies on the North American mainland.
Rhode Island is bordered on the north and east by Massachusetts, on the west by Connecticut and on the south by Rhode Island Sound and the Atlantic Ocean.
Rhode Island 's nickname is the Ocean State.
