Oklahoma Facts
Oklahoma is the 20th largest state in the United States and the 46th to be admitted to the Union. Oklahoma was admitted to the Union on November 16th, 1907. Oklahoma is located in the south-central region of the United States of America.
The name "Oklahoma" comes from the Choctaw words "okla" meaning people and "homma" meaning red. The literal phrase is "Red People". This was chosen by Allen Wright, Principal Chief of the Choctaw Nation during the 1866 treaty negotiations.
Oklahoma is one of the six states on the Frontier Strip. It is bounded on the east by Arkansas and Missouri, on the north by Kansas and northwest by Colorado, on the far west by New Mexico, and on the south and near-west by Texas.
Oklahoma's nickname is the Sooner State.
