California is the 3rd largest state in the United States and the 31st to be admitted to the Union. California was admitted to the Union on September 9th, 1850. California is the most populous area in the United States of America and is located on the Pacific coast of North America bordering Oregon, Nevada and Arizona in the United States and Baja California in Mexico.
California's four largest cities are Los Angeles, San Diego, San Jose and San Francisco. California has a diverse climate and ethnically diverse population. One of the best known signs of entertainment is the Hollywood sign which is situated in the Hollywood area of Los Angeles. The sign was created as an advertisement in 1923 but retained increasing fame after its original purpose had been fulfilled. The sign originally read "Hollywoodland" and advertised it as a "superb environment without excessive cost on the Hollywood side of the hills".
California's landscape ranges from the sandy beaches of the Pacific coast to the rugged, snow-capped Sierra Nevada mountains in the east. The central portion of the state is dominated by the Central Valley.
California has a wide range of national parks with the best known one being Yosemite National Park. California's nickname is the Golden State.
