Alaska- Facts
Alaska is the largest state in the United States and the 49th to be admitted to the Union. Alaska was admitted to the Union on January 3rd, 1959. Alaska is situated in the extreme northwest portion of North America, west of Canada.
Alaska does not border any U.S. State. As the state is so large, its geographical characteristics vary widely by region. Alaska's southern coastal region contains Anchorage, which is Alaska's largest city. Southeast Alaska has several mid-size towns, including the state capital Juneau. Alaska also has tidewater glaciers and extensive forests.
Southwest Alaska is largely coastal, sparsely populated and unconnected to the road system. It is well known for having wet and stormy weather.
Extending west from the southern tip of the Alaska Peninsula are the Aleutian Islands which contain many active volcanoes. The North Slope is known for its oil reservoris and extreme climate.
Alaskan wildlife includes
polar bears, wolf moose and caribou. The state bird is the Willow Ptarmigan and the state flower is the forget-me-not. Alaska's nickname is the Last Frontier.
